History of Snowball
Operation Snowball began in 1977 in Rockford, Illinois when participants of the Illinois Teenage Institute (ITI) (now the Cebrin Goodman Teen Institute/CGTI) came back to their community and thought, “We could do ITI back home!” Thus, Operation Snowball was created. The name originates from the idea that “If I have a positive impact on you, you can have a positive impact on someone else and the effect snowballs.” Out of this concept emerged “A Community of Caring” – the success of Operation Snowball. By 1979, Operation Snowball, Inc. obtained it’s not-for-profit 501(c)(3) status to make the program stronger.
A Comprehensive Prevention Program
- The program fosters a youth & adult partnership.
- Has been implemented in schools and communities ranging from rural, suburban and urban...from small towns to major metropolitian areas...with the ability to adapt components to address local conditions.
- Uses the powerful energy and influence of youth to create an atmosphere of positive peer support, recognizing youth as part of the solution.
- Supports Social Emotional Learning as youth develop attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, and cognitive skills that create healthy and competent adults.
- Utilizes SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework in developing the infrastructure needed for a community-based, public health approach.
So What Do You Do at Snowball?
Before leaving for Lutheran Outdoor Ministry Center, teens will check in at the Lisle Senior High School. Once at camp, teens will be assigned to small groups. Your small group is your family for the next two days. Your small group will meet and reflect at various times throughout the event - usually after large group. Large groups are presented by the teen staff and outside speakers. Each activity is different, but we always talk about taking a chance on Snowball, being yourself, meeting new people, and making good choices. Part of Snowball is devoted to mini-workshops. Workshop topics range from very silly to very serious. (You get to choose!) Of course, we eat a lot too! Meals are provided by Lutheran Outdoor Ministry Center. In addition, small groups are known for having a great snack supply!
What is it like there?
Snowball takes place at Lutheran Outdoor Ministry Center. It’s far enough away from Lisle that you will become completely immersed in the two-day event. It’s like being at camp, but instead of swimming and hiking, you talk about being a teen. Each Snowball is planned by teen directors and teen staff who know the current issues and what you want to do and hear. You choose the workshops you want to attend, and you hear about topics of interest to you.
Snowball is an opportunity to think about what is important. It is a time to process honest feelings in an effort to gain inner strength and knowledge that will give you a new perspective on life. Do yourself a favor and join us for the experience of a lifetime.
